To make an Old Cottage Miniature Garden, I used a lot of branches of trees and a stone house with about five delicate flower patches and a thrice of stones all over the place.

I did this last year and I won first prize!

Thanks Yazzmine for that lovely idea! It sounds really rustic and charming :) I can just imagine the miniature garden once it has matured a bit, with moss growing over the stone cottage.

Also, I am sure that the children would love to actually build a real little old cottage - you could make a wooden bench out of sticks and place it outside the front door too!
